Art Exhibition

PAPAKEH has partnered with Serenity Gallery, to exhibit 7 Paintings on Scroll, at the Restaurant,

located at 18 Ann Siang Road.

4 of 7 artworks are permanent fixtures, painted by artist Teo Teck Soon, that when put together tell a story.

3 of 7 artworks are timed fixtures, also by artist Teo, from the impressive collections of Serenity Gallery.

Serenity Gallery will be generously exhibiting from their archives, the works of artist Teo.

The exhibitions have been selected with the intention to breathe life, and add vibrancy to the Restaurant, through the medium of Chinese ink and colors.

Story Behind the Permanent Exhibits

The permanent exhibits consist of 2 Seal Script Calligraphy artworks and 2 Painting on Scroll artworks.

Each Seal Script Calligraphy bears rooted meaning, with the Calligraphy's essence being imparted onto the Painting on Scroll, to tell the story of a Rooster and the Hen.

A story unfolds when the 4 permanent fixtures are viewed together:

"Entailing a journey of self-reflection,

discovery of potential hidden within,

a coming of age through life's lessons,

culminating in love when least expected,

to finally take the road that leads to home."

Seal script, also sigillary script (Chinese: 篆書; pinyin: zhuànshū),
is a style of writing Chinese characters that was common throughout

the latter half of the 1st millennium BC.
It evolved organically out of the Zhou dynasty bronze script.
The Qin variant of seal script eventually became the standard,
and was adopted as the formal script for all of China during the Qin dynasty. It was still widely used for decorative engraving and seals in the Han dynasty.

形容人學養深粹或功夫已到爐火純青的地步。

Describes a person, who has finally attained profound proficiency in his particular field of expertise,

through perseverance, effort and patience,

despite life's trials and tribulations,

eventually turning something of no worth,

to that of priceless value.

公雞

Painting on Scroll

Once there was a cocky Rooster,

a coat of imagined colorful feathers,

of pink, orange, red, blue, black and violet.

The colors of foolish pride,

arising from vanity, pride and ego.

Once there was a cocky Rooster,

a strut of arrogance,

from self imposed posture,

to proclaim imagined nobility,

from delirious dreams that spurred within.

The eyes say it all,

the Rooster doubted,

that the portrayed self was actually true.

One day, an opportunity,

for self reflection presented itself,

through a Hen.

Perhaps there was more for the Rooster.

Today, the Rooster has learnt not to crow.

Still wearing the colors it always had.

The coat of feathers the same,

as they always were.

Though not from vanity, pride nor ego.

For the want, is now for bliss.

The posture now changed,

not to take, but to provide,

not to dream, but to live.

When the focus is no longer on the self,

the once lonely Rooster,

now walks a new path,

a shared path of bliss.

幸福的家庭

Painting on Scroll

The Hen,

white breasted, pure,

a coat of brown feathers, simple,

rising to a luscious black, elegance.

Unlike any, the Rooster ever laid eyes on.

The Hen,

a foundation, sturdy and strong,

from calm resolve and practicality,

provided stability which opened the door,

from delirious dreams that spurred within.

The eyes say it all,

the Hen steadfast, a pillar of strength,

the Rooster, at the Hen, the entire world.

Proficiency, guided by wisdom of the Hen.

Perseverance, from the Hen's encouragement.

Effort, made easy with the Hen as reason.

Patience, learnt from the Hen's endurement.

Today, baby chicks chirp gleefully,

from the shelter of a big tree.

The blissful family huddles,

the Rooster, the Hen and their baby chicks.

Life's trials and tribulations make sense now,

for they have shaped the Rooster,

to be deserving of the Hen,

to be deserving of the baby chicks,

to finally be of worth.

When the focus is no longer on the self,

the once lonely Rooster,

now resides in love,

within the blissful family.
